located the district of glória, in park eduardo gomes, the landmark monument to the fallen of warld war two is one of the most visible and important memorials in rio de janeiro. easily visible by anyone going to the touristy areas of the city from any of rio's main airports, the monument includes two tall concrete pillars to honor all the fallen soldiers, a metal sculpture to remember the fallen in the air-force, and a blue panel to remember the fallen at sea. The iconic Monumento aos Pracinhas (Monument to the Soldiers), was erected to honor, preserve and disseminate the achievements of Brazilians who died on European Battlefields during the Second World War. It was formerly known as Monumento Nacional aos Mortos da Segunda Guerra Mundial, or the 'National Monument to the Dead of World War II'.
