são conrado is home to two of the most famous mountains in rio de janeiro - pedra bonita, launching pad for hang gliding enthusiast, and the uniquely shaped pedra da gávea, the largest sea-side monolith in the world. part of the parque da tijuca, pedra bonita (beautiful rock) is a 696-meter (2283-foot) deforested mountain that was once covered by brazil's atlantic rain forest (mata atlântica). one of the elements that made this cliff famous in rio and nationally, is the spectacular close-up view of another gorgeous seaside monolith - pedra da gávea. pedra bonita is a popular hiking and rock climbing destination, but the mountain is particularly popular with hang gliders and para gliders who jump from here year round.
